The black bar balanced at the bearing is magnetic and was "pointing" North/South
So what am I?

That is what I thought when I first saw it and then noted the outer dial went from 0-90 and/or 90-0 on each quardrant.

I noticed the 90° quadrants but thought they might be useful to some form of navigation unknown to me. Given that it has a needle pointer, I presume the device is used flat rather than upright. Might it be an angle finder for construction or mapping?

I was clearing out my Father's study yesterday and there was a box of stuff labelled with my name and it contained my Grandfather's old Royal Artillery Prism Compass and this galvonometer, I have no idea where it came from but Dad was very resourceful :grin:

Not to diminish Hans' immense knowledge and abilities, but a Google Image search for philip harris brass is what I would have done...
