Insert picture with automatic link

Post by Rudi »

Hi,

When I insert a picture into PPT using the drop down arrow and select Link or Insert and Link, the picture is added.
When I view the Edit Links dialog, it informs that the picture is on a manual link and the option is greyed out to prevent automatic links. When I close and open the presentation, there is no prompts to say that links need updating (even though links are manual according to links dialog).

Can anyone explain what is going on?
Are my images linked,
When do they update (if they update - since there is no prompt to inform that updating is needed),
Can I control if they are automatic or manual?

Some clarity to avoid insanity... TX

The dialog is slightly misleading.

A linked picture will always be updated automatically when the presentation is opened.
It won't be updated automatically while the presentation is open - you need to do this manually by clicking Update Now.
Best wishes,
Hans

BTW, the Automatic Update option is available for example when you paste an Excel range or chart as a link. If such a link is set to Automatic Update, changes to the Excel workbook will be reflected "live" in the PowerPoint presentation.
Best wishes,
Hans

TX. I have noticed that with charts and worksheet objects.
I think that is why I was thrown off balance with the pictures? I could not understand the lack of option for automatic update?

In further searches I found this piece of insight from Steve Rindsberg;
PPT file and remembers the original file's time/date. When you open the presentation again, it checks to see if the external file's been updated and if so, updates.

As Steve mentions:
Link has the advantage that the file size of the presentation remains small, but the linked pictures need to be available when you show the presentation.
Insert and Link increases the file size, just like Insert, but the pictures will still be displayed if the source files are not available. Yet they will be updated when possible/necessary.
Which option works best for you depends on the situation - there's no single 'correct' option.

About the dialog: it's a generic dialog in which items that are not applicable are grayed out.
Best wishes,
Hans
