Desktop icon / saving a screenshot

Nothing to lose sleep over but why do desktop icons tend to mover to different positions automatically; eg I have a folder for passwords which I like to keep in the top right corner for convenience sake but randomly it is moved? Secondly, why when taking a screenshot does the "Save as" option default to PNG (*.[png) as JPG (*.jpg) saves in a smaller file size which is preferred? Dave

Right-click an empty part of the desktop.
Move the mouse pointer to View.
If there is a check box next to 'Auto arrange icons', click on this item to deselect it.

For photos, .jpg i a very efficient format. But for images that contain lots of text (such as this web page) and/or simple graphics elements such as lines and boxes, .png is generally more efficient.
So which one is to be preferred depends on what you're taking a screenshot of.
