This is a question about configuring Windows 11 File Explorer.
I edit videos for a group I belong to and I’d like to configure all the relevant folders I use in a consistent manner. But I don’t know how to replicate my configuration or make it the default.
The configuration I want for all these folders is this:
The View should be Details and the sort should be Descending on Date.
The displayed columns should be, Name, Date, Size, Length, Contributing Artists, Type.
Is there a way to apply that configuration automatically to a set of folders?
Also, in folder Properties > Customize, what do the “Optimize” settings (General Items, Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos) actually do? Don’t notice any difference.
Thanks,
- Jeff

How to Customize Your Folder and Library Templates to Suit Your Needs on Windows 10 and 11 for an explanation of folder templates.
Try the following:
- Activate one of your video folders.
- Set the view properties the way you want.
- Click the See more button (the ...) on the ribbon bar of File Explorer.
- Select Options.
- Activate the View tab.
- Click 'Apply to Folders'.

Re: Configuring File Explorer views
Thanks! That seems to have worked.
One question, though. In Options > View what does "all folders of this type" refer to? I mean what is the "type" and what is the scope of "Apply to [all] folders"?
Looking forward to reading about the templates. As always, Hans, thanks so much.

Re: Configuring File Explorer views
Type is one of the file types mentioned in the article I linked to: documents, music, pictures and video.
So if the active folder contains videos, "Apply to Folders" will apply the view settings of the active folder to all video folders (determined on the basis of the folder contents)

Got it. I'm in the middle of reading the Templates article now. Great information.
