Disable new settings presentations

Post by Rudi »

Hi,

Is there a way to completely disable the "new style" settings presentations and default back the the traditional Control Panel dialogs for the various settings in Windows 10?

These new full screen presentations of settings is confusion and annoying?

I gave up and resorted to Classic Shell.

If you have Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, you can disable the Settings app using GPO, but I wouldn't recommend it. With each major update to Windows 10, Microsoft moves more settings from Control Panel to the Settings app, so it's better to get used to it. You can use the Search box to find a setting if you don't know where it is.
Best wishes,
Hans

Having scanned this article I notice it is named the Settings App, (as you call it Hans). The initial screen is a "non dialog" version of the control panel, and this is fine, but I'm not keen on the full screen presentation of the various settings. I feel the dialogs are easier to use.

I agree Hans, as with all things, one has to have an open mind and adjust to the new, so my annoyance is most probably just temporary. Actually I'm still on Win 7, but my wife is on Win 10 and last night I had to make an adjustment on her PC and I had an issue trying to find some settings due to the new full screen presentations. I reactivated the old control panel, found the settings and quickly had it fixed. I think this experience just added to my initial annoyances. I'm sure that when I migrate to Win 10, it will just take a week or two and my mind will be reprogrammed.

TX Leif, though Classic Shell is more for the start menu than the Settings App.

Rudi

With Windows 10 rather than using menus get used to searching for things. Programs & settings are easy to search. Just press/click the Windows key and start typing. You'll find programs and settings very easily without have to open an app (control panel or settings) or search/scroll through the start menu.

Not for if you're one of those (like me) who think Win 7 + Office 2010 was 'peak good'. In the world of Win 10, their annoyance will be permanent.

No, Windows XP and Office 2000 were the best.
No no no, Windows 98 and Office 97 were the last decent versions.
No no no no no, MS-DOS and WordPerfect were bliss...

OK, point taken. Let me rephrase my post...

If, like me, you are :cranky: then your annoyance with the your OS and Office suite will be perpetual.

Should we look forward to the combo of Win 11 and Office 2019 or would AI have taken over by then and we are ruled by android robots?

A friend sent me this recently. It's very reassuring vis-à-vis the Robot Revolution.

Sorry Hans, I take issue with this.

I for one still miss CP/M 1.4 and Wordstar 1.0. Things have been getting slower ever since. :groan:
Cheers, Claude.

There will be a lot of sore throats in the future.

Maybe MSFT will have finished moving everything to the settings app* when it's time for something new. Ah, but they "backtracked" a bit and introduced Fluent Design with Acrylic effects (almost like bread and circuses).

Yes, there's always someone saying an earlier OS was better in some way, and one can make fun of it; but I think it** started with Win8. In the beta we learned that the OS wanted to give us personalised content based on location and name & account picture. Picture, it is just plain silly. Windows 10 has added quite a lot to that, not to mention a serious amount of confusion etc.

* Is just about everything an app nowadays? MS Word? (The settings for Apps are inside an app.)
** My annoyance.

Grumpy addendum:
A year ago or so I had to help someone with Windows 10 and some software, the OS was running an Asian language; moving around in the new settings (which have changed a bit since then) when you rarely use Windows 10 (even if I had tried several betas earlier, and have some running as virtual machines) was no fun. I would have better luck escaping a closet on fire with my hands tied.
