More Onedrive Woes

Post by Jeff H »

I've coming crying about Onedrive a few times before, but now it's worse. This time I suddenly noticed that there's no Onedrive app. It worked earlier today but now there's no cloud icon in the notifications area and when I search for Onedrive.exe it isn't found. In the Start menu I type Onedrive then select Onedrive App and get this:
Screenshot (4).png
In Apps & Features I search for Onedrive and 2 appear: one dated 5/14/18, 101mb, v.18.065.0329.0002; and the other dated 6/21/18 (today), 71mb, v.17.29.1.0.

I went back to the "9 Tips" article to do steps 8 and 9, but nothing is found so it can't reset. I've redownloaded it and it says it installs, but when I click "Launch" it opens a window showing the files I have set to sync, but they don't sync.

I'm at a loss!
:hmmn:

Try the following (warning: you will lose your OneDrive settings, you will have set them again):
- Click the Start button.
- Type regedit and press Enter.
- Click Yes as the User Access Control prompt.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive.
- Delete the entire OneDrive key.
- Close RegEdit.
- Reinstall OneDrive.

If it doesn't work, you can still use the web interface to upload and download files.
Best wishes,
Hans

Hi Jeff H, this is what I suggest.
Open a Command Prompt.
Type cmd in the Search programs and files box. Right click and run as admin.
Copy text below and press Enter.
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
This worked for me.
-
If your still getting 2 entrys in progs & features, I suggest using RevoUninstaller to clear them. Now check as Hans posted.
-
I now suggest putting PatchMyPC on your desktop. (Your PC must be connected to the internet) Run the program without making any changes. Find the entry for Onedrive, tick the box then install the program.
It will put a log.txt file on your desktop. This is how mine looks.

I will delete the entrys for the 21st before saving the log.
This lets me check if I remembered to run PMPC.

I tried changing PMPC to run on a schedule with some options selected, but it tried to re download Google Chrome, Avast Free anti virus & Firefox, but they can be updated faster manually.

Thanks for these suggestions, George, but I'm not sure they are what I need.

It sounds like PMPC is just a third party updater. Win10 updates automatically (which could be the source of the problem), so when working, it should update Onedrive too.

I think it's starting to work, but it wasn't straightforward at all. I did the regedit change and reinstalled from the app store, but the set up wizard didn't run. I poked around a lot (so I can't remember everything I did) but kept getting indications that I wasn't signed in or connected.

When I tried signing in it just didn't respond and I continued to see the grayed-out cloud icon in the notification tray and my Onedrive folder didn't have the sync icons. But then I must have done something a little different and after a delay, the cloud turned white and the sync icons appeared. It tells me it's processing 11,000 changes, but it seems to be working.

As always, thanks Hans!

Does anyone have an idea why this might have happened. Especially, is there something I can do to prevent it happening again? My previous issue was that once in a while the app would just stop working. I had to keep an eye on it and when I noticed I could restart it by typing "Onedrive" in the Start menu. But this was different. My files sync'd at 5:30pm yesterday, then around 8 or so, Onedrive just wasn't there.

It's very strange that OneDrive just disappeared. But then, Windows is always a bit weird...

... and I don't always know what I'm doing! Anyway, the re-sync is completed. There were conflicts I had to resolve manually with the files I changed after whatever happened yesterday evening, but all is good ... for now.

Hi Jeff H, I run Win7 and know nothing of Win10, but as you posted in the Windows General forum, it was rather confusing. My Onedrive works perfectly.

I appreciated your response, George.

I also didn't know if my issue was general to Onedrive or specific to Win10 -- still don't. My Onedrive works well far more often than it doesn't, and I like it very much. These occasional glitches can be a little annoying though.

I have 2 computers only, both have OneDrive installed on D: Drive. I do frequent back-ups using Acronis with occasional restores, which means my files on Onedrive are unaffected.

I have PatchMyPC (it;s portable & only 1.5mb) on my desktop. I run it manually and it finds updates for all my installed programs & missed items by Win Updates.
