Windows 10 Mail app - blue screen

Post by ridders »

Hi

The Windows Mail app has always seemed flaky to me but today I have a new problem with it on a Windows tablet (Win 10 version 1709)
The live tile works and shows that new mail is being received.
However, opening the app just creates a blank blue screen with a blank taskbar icon.
After a few seconds the app closes by itself.
I have rebooted but this hasn't fixed the issue.
The problem also affects the calendar part of the app.
AFAIK this app cannot be uninstalled & reinstalled or indeed repaired.
I am reluctant to update to version 1803 due to a separate issue with the IE geolocation service - see separate thread

Any ideas on how to fix this?

You can use PowerShell to uninstall/reinstall the Mail app - see Fix: Windows 10 Mail and Calendar app crashing

Hans

Thanks Hans

I had already tried resetting the Mail app - all that's done is remove the live tile!

I've just tried the Powershell method (as an administrator) as mentioned in the link
The output message indicated it had worked but after restarting I found the apps both still existed & Windows Store wouldn't let me reinstall them
The alternative 'solution' requires purchasing Reimage Repair which I don't want to do

Just trying an MS remote support session now
If that fails, I think I'll update to 1803 then reverse the update & see if that fixes it

The remote session worked & I now have the Mail app back.
To my amazement, I was first in the queue & it was resolved in around 15 minutes! I was impressed

The MS tech offered to provide the instructions for the removal of Windows apps together with reinstall instructions which I was happy to accept
With his permission. I have attached these here for others to use

To remove any of the app(s), open Powershell as an administrator
Why it has to be so difficult is another issue entirely!

To reinstall an app, go to the Windows store ... or use Powershell again

I hope this is useful to others
