Windows won't remember settings

Post by weese237 »

Hello,

For some reason, my computer, Windows 10 Home won't remember my settings for default programs.
For example, I keep changing the default program to open when viewing a pdf file. I prefer to use Foxit and have change it many times but the time I need to look at a pdf file, it's back I believe it's Windows Edge.

I've tried doing it thru Foxit and also thru the control panel. No luck.

How do I get it to stay?

In Foxit can you try File > Preferences > File Associations > Advanced, and clear the checkbox marked "Include browser when setting default PDF viewer"

Hi,
Well, it's disappointing, but another day and it's back to Edge, not Foxit.
I've read and read and can't seem to find a solution. :hairout:

Thanks,

Is your version of Foxit Reader up-to-date?

Hi Hans,

I was actually using Foxit PhantomPDF ver 6.2.1 Standard. I think it's up to ver 9 now. Too expensive to update since version 6 is plenty. So I changed the default to the Foxit Reader. I was using ver 9.0 but just updated to 9.1.

It's now working again, so let's see what happens tomorrow!

Thanks! Hopefully it's just a matter of using Reader instead of Phantom.

Well, opened up a file today and sure enough, back to Edge. Checked the setting for default app and obviously that changed back to Edge as well.

Guess I'm going to have to live with it for now.

Very strange! I had problems with Windows 10 resetting default apps in the very first release (July 2015), but not in recent versions. I remember that running an outdated version of WinZip used to reset default apps. Could something like that be the cause - is there a specific app that you open before you notice that default apps are reset?
Best wishes,
Hans

I do have an old version of Winzip actually. I haven't used it in a few days. Now that you mention it, I noticed the last time I used it, I had to change my preferences again. It wouldn't keep a couple of the settings I like.

Today, however, I only had Firefox running when I tried to open a pdf file. Very strange.

Hans,
I just brought up winzip for the heck of it and I got several popup windows saying my “default programs have been reset”. Will have to look to see if I have a newer version. I only use it to open zip files so I don’t want to buy a current one. I’m currently using 12. I think I may have 16 somewhere. Will see if it makes a difference.

I may wait until I reinstall windows.

Hans,
I uninstalled winzip 12 and installed version 15.5. The moment it came up, I still got the “default programs have been reset” or something similar message. What did you do to correct yours?

Thanks,
Louise

WinZip 15.5 is from 2011, long before Windows 10 was released. I have version 20.5 from 2016; the current version of WinZip is 22.5.

Hi,
Has Winzip gone to an annual subscription yet? If so, I wonder what the last stand alone version is. I won't be buying a subscription. I may look for another alternative.

Thanks

You can still get the current version as a standalone version (but Corel will nag you continually to get the next version when it is released )

7-Zip is a popular free zip utility.

For a short period of time you can get Universal ZIP free in the Microsoft Store.
