1803 update stuck at 63%

Post by StuartR »

I started Windows 10 update 1803 at about 09:35 this morning. By 10:45 it had reached 63% complete and there it remains. Ah well, I guess I can wait till tomorrow before I start to worry.

Is this in the download phase, the installing phase, re-booting?

If you are using third party A/V, did you disable it?

You might want to try the Media Creation Tool.

The download phase completed quite quickly. It is now 63% through the installing phase. The only anti-virus is Microsoft Essentials.

I will wait a few more hours and then try a reboot. If all else fails then I will try creating media and upgrading from that.

After 6 hours I restarted the computer and it is now downloading again.

I wonder if it might be caused by the fact that my system partition is encrypted with Veracrypt.

It's now been round the loop of applying the update, restarting, saying the update is installing, reboot again - three times. Each time it ends by displaying a message saying that it couldn't finish installing the update. I guess it's time to try decrypting the system partition.

That took a very long time, and a lot of reboots. I had to unencrypt my system partition. Job for the weekend - use Veracrypt to re-encrypt the system.

Wow! That's quite a journey Stuart. Sounds painful! :crazy:

Doesn't MS usually make a major change seem like a long session on the torture stretching rack? When you finally succeed you seem to be a few inches taller. :groan:

Stuart has been unlucky this time (but we know the probable cause of that). Updating has been painless for me with all major updates of Windows 10, on both my desktop and my laptop...
Best wishes,
Hans

@Bob,

Not really. I have my system drive encrypted with Bitlocker and have had no problems through upgrading multiple Windows Insider Preview builds. Unfortunately, third party software which interacts at a very low level with Windows often requires updates when new Windows versions are released.

I agree with Joe and Hans on this one. Most Windows updates have been completely painless for me. I always kept my data partition encrypted, but I have only recently started encrypting my system partition, because there is sensitive data in temporary files and deleted files that hide there. I should have realised that this would need to be backed out before trying a major update.
