Why don’t Cutting Boards have Rulers marked along the edge?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

It has long been a puzzle to me. Why don’t Cutting Boards have Rulers marked along the edge?

Why do that? Think of Cutting Carrots or any other long-stemmed vegetable or fruit into lengths to fit neatly into a preserving jar.

Think of Cutting Rhubarb Stalks into fixed lengths.

Think of marking off a large chunk of meat – Beef or Pork Loin – preparatory to slicing it to facilitate Cooking or Freezing in portions.

I’m just saying ...

Cheers
Chris

Next you'll be asking why cutting boards don't connect to the internet to suggest recipes...

Chris, you should upgrade to a tablet cutting board.
No knife can scratch its Gorilla Glass surface  and the tablet can easily show a ruler in metric or imperial.

PS: Some rulers even allow one to zoom in and out to make them appear bigger on the screen.

Rudi

I've always thought a knife sharpener (or several for various knife/ cleaver sizes) would be an appropriate addition. Just something simple like this:

Simply put, Chris, They would be very awkward when trying to measure out a room size, for example.

On a more serious note, it could be interesting for some people who don't feel comfortable when measuring with their eyes, but uunless you make a super expensive cutting board out of some extreme high duty material, the ruler will slowly fade away due to the knife digging in the material and scratching the paint, the laser engraving, or whatever is used ; and if the measurements are carved into the material, juices from whatever you're cooking will pool up in them and it will be quite disgusting.

So, let's save the innovation for when the board can project an hologram you can just "follow" with your knife, and before that, I'll keep using my good ol' wooden boards!

Make your own board, by using 1 inch cubes and of ate least 2 different colors of wood. This way you could have 1 inch markings in all directions.

Do a Google on checkered cutting boards and select images!

... Well, I hadn't thought about that, this is definitely a smart idea! And of course this could be replicated easily with colored plastic... if you are the kind of alien who'd use a plastic cutting board, that is.

I have made several cutting boards and use two different colors of wood.
Most of the time I just use stripes that are 1 inch in width. But a couple of times I went a step forward and cut them cross wise into 1 inch strips and staggered them, to get the checkered pattern.

Interesting!
How did you cut them into one-inch strips?
Is there some sort of boot-strap process :flee:

I confess that when I was younger I started making draughts boards by gluing veneer strips onto twelve-inch pinewood planks.
Nothing fancy.

The varnish might have stopped carving knives getting rusty (yech!)
