Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I have begun experimenting with TVP. Two types are purchased, one a granular form (looks very much like I wish my sauted ground beef would turn out!), and one a pastille form, rather like the licorice Pontefract cakes.

My first effort was "ground beef". I used a 28oz can of tomatoes with half that can of TVP. Added sauted diced onions, herbs etc and am using it with pasta as a meat sauce.

Not bad, especially as I can make a decent batch and store it in lidded jars in the fridge; my theory is that it is less likely to go bad over a week or two than is regular beef. Correct?

Please and Thank You: What other simple recipes are available for TVP?

TVP will certainly keep longer than meat.

A quick and very simple recipe:
Heat one or two tablespoons of oil in a (non-stick) frying pan. Sunflower oil works well; olive oil is OK but preferably not extra virgin olive oil - it becomes bitter if it becomes too hot.
Fry some sliced bell peppers (any color, stem and seed pod removed and discarded; take one per person if it's intended as a main course, one per two persons if it's a side dish) and sliced mushrooms; stir frequently. Add diced onions and/or garlic if you like.
When the peppers start to become soft, add TVP. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
Just before serving, sprinkle some chopped parsley over the mix. You can use other herbs if you like.
Optionally, add some grated parmezan or other hard cheese.
Serve over boiled long grain brown rice, with a simple green salad.
Best wishes,
Hans

:hello: Hans
Your recipe sounds :yum: but I'd but ground chuck in instead of TVP!
Seriously, I've not seen TVP in the grocery. I should take a look! It may be tasty for a meatless day of meals.

TVP can also be used successfully in all kinds of casseroles.

Thanks Hans.
The tip to serve over rice is timely, as I am making heavy use of the rice cooker I salvaged from the recycling room.

Thank you Doc Watson! Depending on how serious the stormy weather is that is headed our way, we will have to decide whether we will go to the grocery tomorrow as planned; or If wind gusts are 40mph as the weather forecast people say may happen, we will stay home!
The store that we want to go to is an IGA that carries Bob's Red Mill products! I will look for TVP when I do visit there! :clapping: :thankyou:
