This has been bugging me ever since I obtained a bread machine from my friend's recycling room bins.
The machine does an excellent job of baking a cylindrical loaf, but the paddle is baked into the loaf, and always tears on its way out, which means the first two slices of bread look like failed bagels.
Solution: Load ingredients and press start as usual.
Let the machine do its first 5-minute stir cycle, it's first 15-minute pause, and it's second 5-minute knead cycle.
Then empty the dough into a regular rectangular loaf tin.
