Netgear Firmware Updated.

Post by Roderunner »

Hi Folks, my Netgear router DGN2200v3 has just been updated. I don't know if other models have one available, so check yours now.

Did it fix any problems or improve performance?

Hi BobH, I never had any problems, as for performance just a minor lowering of download speed.
I haven't looked at Netgear site for what the firmware intentions were yet.

Thanks, RodeRunner!

I have a NetGear (unsure of model number without looking) with which I've had some performance problems. I'm going to check to see if the update is available for mine and if it might improve things.

Thanks for the heads up!

A wise and elderly technician once said to me that router firmware should stay untouched unless there was a real problem which a newer version of firmware was intended, nay guaranteed, to fix.

He said much the same about server BIOS updates...

I think there have been a couple of firmware updates for my (now very long in the tooth) Netgear router, at least one of which was available from the day I bought it but I've never bothered with any of them. Maybe they do fix real problems but from my perspective as an ordinary user, the router has worked without issue from the day it came out of the box so I've never seen any real problems that need fixing.

I've probably just jinxed it now....

I think the situation has changed since the days when I also used to recommend leaving router firmware alone unless there was a significant problem. This is now yet another vector for malware, and needs to be regularly updated to help keep you safe.
