visio 2007 on windows 7 - another instances of visio launch

on windows 7
if I double click to open a visio file, opens the visio file.
if I double click to open a second visio file, the result is opens the creates a second window and doesnt open in the orginial first window.

Ive had a look in the task manager, there are two sessions of VISIO.exe running.

Meaning on windows 7 another instance of visio application has launched.

in windows XP
ive checked Visios DDE settings,
and registry settings ie
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Visio.exe\shell\Open\Command
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\VISIO.EXE" "%1"

Ive checked windows 7 registry settings. However in windows 7 the names have changed
I checked google in windows 7 for settings to launch visio in the one application instance however I couldnt find anything relative.

anyone know this can be set for windows 7
set visio
and also microsoft project

That's not the default behavior - Visio should open multiple documents in the same instance under Windows 7 too.
Does it help if you perform a repair installation of Visio?

yes ill give that ago and let you know the results.

Ive checked new SOE - two different pcs with different user accounts both with visio. and getting the same results.
perhaps the visio msi install package requires updating for windows 7

ill check and let you know the results of a visio repair

a Visio repair didnt resolve the issue.

the results:
When I launch the 1st visio file. the result: a visio.exe launches
When I launch the 2ndvisio file. the result: a second window visio application launches ie in Task Manager a second visio.exe runs

Try the following:

Right-click any .vsd file.
Select Open With | Choose Default Program... from the context menu.
If Visio is listed, select it.
Otherwise, click Browse..., locate VISIO.EXE, select it and click Open.
Tick the check box 'Always use this program to open this kind of file'.
Click OK.

VISIO.EXE is installed by default in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14, or in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14 if you have 32-bit Visio on 64-bit Windows 7.

that didnt work

the results are :
if i double click to open on a visio file - visio luanches
if i double click to open on a second visio file - a second visio.exe luanches
instead of opening up the second file in the one instalce of visio

Wow - a nine months old thread comes to life again...

Try this:
- Open the Programs and Features control panel.
- Select Microsoft Visio 2007.
- Click Change.
- Select Repair.
- Click Continue and follow the instructions.

i work on something, pick this up again , work on something else...

ive performed a repair on Visio 2007 and rebooted my pc
the results are the same
On opening a 2nd visio file 2nd window visio application launches ie in Task Manager a second visio.exe runs

Ive emailed Microsoft Support. I await their response. If the suggestion works...ill post here

I set the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Visio\Application\SingleInstanceFileOpen

1 = yes
0 = no

However this doesn’t resolve the issue.

I applied the following and rebooted the pc
1. InstalledhotFix-Visio KB2597953
2. Installed Service Pack 3 for Visio - KB2526291
3. note: above registry key doesn’t exist on pc

The results:
From the windows desktop double click to open the second visio file launches in the open visio (the 1st session of Visio) – correct behaviour.
