It's nice to know that there's an emergency 174 km ahead. That should give you enough time to prepare for it.
Best wishes,
Hans

On the Nullabor they used to have huge signs that read "Miles to Food, Accommodation, Gas"
That was it!

Those signs were to alert you to the next sign, about 200 yards further on, that would read:
Mundrabilla 20
Madura 190
Cocklebiddy 300
Caiguna 430

I made up the distances except the first distance was always "20"; you got 20 minutes to argue about whether or not you should stop, and if so, for what!

On the general subject of highways, here is my Tuesday morning after-Labor-Day-drive sightings report, 150 miles, mostly at 70 mph, north on a four-lane divided highway:
  • 22 Northern Harriers.
    68 Pronghorn.
2 northbound cars, 110 miles apart.
My kind of drive.

I believe this is an Outdoor North American Record. :crossfingers:

That reminds me of the old Punch(?) joke, or else Letter To The Times:
Dear Sir,
Whilst wandering through the woods today I came across a black plastic disk, about 10 inches diameter, with a 1/4 inch diameter hole in the middle and a single spiral groove on each side!
Is this a record?

P.S. I believe too that this is the first time I've used the color [ color=#000000 ] in a post.

It could be; please advise after you've measured the length of the spiral groove.

Unfortunately, this does not qualify as an Indoor North American Record; however, I believe it does qualify as an Indoor Yilgarn Region Record. :crossfingers:

However, since no one here at the Indoor Record Center knows quite where the Yilgarn Region is, please stop by at your convenience to pick up your reward.

I can work it out without leaving my desk: The total length of :groovin: on the object is exactly twice the average.

Sadly, we don't have a Convenience here; all we have is a Brunos.
There is a convenience store east of here on the corner of Ashbourne, I think ...

Did you like the lovely patch of red earth where they dug the hole? "A little iron goes a long way".

When I am working at my computer and wishing I was somewhere else doing something different (which is most of the time nowadays) I take a look at Crazy Guy on a Bike where I can fantasize about my next bike trip.
I recently came across this account, with terrific photos, of a cycle trip up the Oodnadatta Track , one of well known inland highways.

John

Thanks John.
The photo of corrugations brought tears of nostalgia to my eyes.

I read in the paper recently that Chinese tourists (who we now get quite a lot of) don't ask the expected questions: "Where are the Kangaroos, Koalas etc?"

Instead they ask: "Where are the people?"

Fed by gravity? Looks like people to me ... However what a great idea, provided your land is flat and your roads are straight! Sound's a bit like the Netherlands to me ...
