Orson Welles on Donny Osmond: "He has Van Gogh's ear for music."

Probably the oldest joke in the book:

Vincent Van Gogh was standing at the corner of the bar in his local pub when his mate Rembrandt walked in.
"Fancy a Whiskey, Van Goghy?" called out Rembrandt.
"No, its okay", said Van Gogh, "I've got one ear."

... and on that note I'd better gogh

It took me a while to get these, as the name Gogh is not pronounced "go" here.

Very funny.

Hmmm, interesting. Learn something new everyday is my motto!

In Googling, it seems that neither the British NOR American pronunciation is correct and I never knew that. According to a few places I saw it's pronounced like the Scottish "loch" with a guttural sound.

Never happen, not in my country. Most Americans can't deal with the German guttural sounds either!

The initial sound is also somewhat gutteral, not the hard G that you hear from British or American speakers.

There are two sound clips on the Vincent van Gogh: Frequently Asked Questions page (look for Q11: How do you pronounce the name "Van Gogh"?)

The first one demonstrates how someone from the northern half of The Netherlands pronounces the name, the second one how it's pronounced by someone from the southern province where Vincent van Gogh was born and raised.
Best wishes,
Hans

The definitive answer from the fount of all knowledge, who got their information from the Dutch version of QI & ends with "sounds like an outbreak of pneumonia in a frog pond".

Well, most people here in The Netherlands wouldn't pronounce it that harshly (although some certainly do). People in the southern part of the country, Vincent van Gogh's home ground, have a so-called "soft g", so the authentic pronunciation is not throat-damaging at all.
Best wishes,
Hans
