All British persons are descended from Royalty

Post by John Gray »

There was a fascinating BBC Radio 4 programme on this topic around Christmas/New Year.
I'm not sure whether all areas of the world can access it, but here's the blurb:
We’re a nation obsessed with genealogy. Millions of us are gripped by TV shows like 'Who Do You Think You Are', where genealogists show celebrities their famous ancestors - like Danny Dyer being descended from Edward III, the first Plantagent King! But what if Danny doesn’t get exclusive bragging rights? With the help of mathematician Hannah Fry and Habsburg Royal Historian professor Martyn Rady, population geneticist Dr Adam Rutherford sets out to prove that we're all descended from royalty, revealing along the way that family trees are not the perfect tool for tracing your heritage. But can it really be true? Can we all be descended from Henry VIII or Charlemagne!?

To be fair, this is a radio programme based on his 2017 book: A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Stories in Our Genes which is well worth a read.

And I thought discovering a baron about 13 g-grandfathers back was amazing.

What is a baron, anyway?

Given the number of people who have migrated to and from the UK in the last few generations, I suspect this must mean than everyone in the world is descended from British royalty.

There are a lot of people in countries in Africa or Asia who may disagree with.you.

While not a royal, I've found, in my family tree, one Geoffrey the incompetent

But, as a proud Australian, I have a great great grandmother who was transported from Ireland as a convict for stealing g sheep. Our own sort of royalty.
