The Rosette Nebula

Post by Graeme »

It's been cloudy for weeks here. So here's my attempt at processing my good friend Steve's data. This image was captured using a monochrome camera with three groups of exposures, one with a Sulphur 2 filter, one an Hydrogen alpha filter and one with an Oxygen 3 filter. I mapped the three to Red, Green and Blue to give these hues, aka the Hubble palette.

The Rosette Nebula is a massive cloud of hydrogen in the constellation of Monoceros with an open cluster of hot young stars at it's centre which excite the hydrogen atoms. The dark blobs bottom right of centre are known as Bok globules these ones are said to look like a menagerie of animals falling into the centre! What animals can you see?

A close-up view of the Bok globules was the Astronomy Picture of the Day in December 2009. To me, one of them looks like a dragon with outspread wings, and another looks a bit like a cow.

😀

I see a dog jumping in at the centre and an elephant at the other end of the queue!

If I tilt my head slightly to the left I see a cow's head.
