another fluke shot

Post by stuck »

We visited an arboretum yesterday, mainly to see the autumn colours on the trees but there is also a bird of prey centre within the grounds and that's always worth a look as they fly some of birds each hour.

I took just over 70 pictures over the course of our visit but only discovered when I got home that, because this new camera has so many bells and whistles on it, something was not set correctly and so many of the photos are not very good. However, this one of a Spectacled Owl is worth sharing.

A wonderful shot, very well done.

I must confess, being a country lad originally (dinner time TV often had graphic shots of internal pests), I thought that the fluke shot in the subject was an injection for liver fluke.

On a more serious note, I was interested in the markings; especially at the roots of the pinions(?) Those arcs give the impression of a second set of "eyes".
So I went looking for images on Google, but there are not many images of the insides of the spectacled owl's wings.

Any avian authorities here who can interpret wing markings? Or are they totally random?
(I think zebra stripes are random, but they are organized (as stripes))

There is an Owl "sanctuary" quite near here ( Houten in the Netherlands ) that we've visited. I was impressed by the number of different type owls they have there. Some of them looked a bit glum though sitting there in their cages. Owls weren't the only things there there were also quite a number of wallabies and a small snake house!

In Herefordshire (UK) there is an Owl Centre which has <gasp!> owls of all denominations! There must be about 20 types thereof, all looking cross.
It is actually the "Small Breeds Farm Park & Owl Centre", and well worth a visit if you happen to be passing...
