Decisions, decisions....

Post by Leif »

Good old Booking.com just sent me some 'Recommended destinations' - it's just so difficult to choose between the two...

Well, there are only 6 deals left for Hemel Hempstead, so go for it and hurry up!
Best wishes,

I'll go for Strasbourg as Hemel looks very overcast currently!

There is no question Leif, the reason Hemel Hempstead is more than twice as expensive as Strasbourg is quite clear: The path is Hemel Hempstead is clearly visible, who knows where to go in Strasbourg ?
Cheers, Claude.

The offer to Strasbourg expects that you take your own kayak.

It has to be Hemel Hempstead, it has it's own magic roundabout and seeing that is worth £69.

I miss Hemel Hempstead so much, I have not been there since yesterday.

Looks very intimidating. And a river runs through it too!

I once met a young man from Hemel Hempstead in Rochester, NY, at a Kodak Conference. Probably 40+ years ago now; so he probably isn't so young now.

But, that roundabout is very interesting. Does one travel around it in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction? In the States, the ones I've encountered require anti-clockwise travel.

Both. It depends on where you want to go - or at least, where you would like to go. That's why it's magic!

It really makes you pine for the open countryside...

You go round clockwise if you drive on the proper side of the road...

At least 90% of the time I drive around that roundabout I go anti-clockwise (it's usually quicker)

You must be driving on the improper side of the road. Or perhaps you're in the Southern hemisphere?

Interesting to note that the not-quite-as-magic-as-the-Swindon-Magic-Roundabout Hemel Roundabout also has a Magic Footpath going through its middle!

PS I thought that roundabouts in America were called rotaries?

We British use "turning circle" to mean the diameter of the circle travelled by driving a car slowly having turned the steering wheel as far as possible to the right (or left). Hence taxis usually have the smallest turning circle of vehicles since they need to turn easily.

They are called traffic circles IME or just circles. I used the British term due to its location in Hemel Hempstead.

I sometimes ride my bike round a few of the very large roundabouts near where I live. That can be challenging AND scary.

The roundabout at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris is difficult to negotiate. Tourists have been known to circle it for a long time without managing to take an exit...
Best wishes,
