Sweet-toothed Toronto teens took a bite out of rising post-war candy prices in 1947, but the movement was quickly derailed by the Red Scare.

Re: For Chris Greaves: the candy bar strike
Chocolate bar price decrease! Had to dig through my archives and found an old Montreal Gazette photo announcing a price decrease in chocolate bars January 1st. I believe the date of January 1st was for 1947. Thus I would have just turned 6 years old in this photo. My 3 cousins are in the front row and that is me on the left, hat less with the big ears in the second row. The owner and his 2 sons are in the rear. My uncle was the chief photographer for the Montreal Gazette at the time and that is how my cousins and I were selected to be in that photo! I still have a sweet tooth for the 's.

I pretty well stopped buying sweets (Aust: "lollies", Amer: "Candies") when decimal currency came in, and all of a sudden instead of getting twelve penny sticks for a shilling we got only ten penny-sticks for the equivalent of a shilling - a ten-cent piece.
I recognized rip-offs at an early age.
That's why nowadays is stick to plasticized air-foam-filled gelatinous dairy products at (last time I looked) five dollars for a gallon tub.

You got it Bob!BobArch2 wrote:Hey Chris, you are of course thinking of your favourite tub.
And I got it last night, well, one of it.
FWIW last Wednesday I was up near Markdale. Donna's Place to be exact.
I was given a choice: We could go to a diner and pig out OR I could take a chance of there being a guided tour with free samples at the end.
I went to the diner and filled us up on Newfie Food!
Cheers
Chris
