Find the snake

Post by TonyE »

It's a copperhead snake, it is venomous so you would not want to tread on it

Wow, that's a tough one! Unfortunately, copper heads and rattlesnakes like to live in the places I've lived, Kentucky, Texas and Florida, so one has to be very cautious digging in the garden and around the woodpiles!

Brings to mind an incedent a number of yeares ago. My brother and I and my two boys were hiking along an old forest trail in the mountains of NY State. We were crossing a beaver dam across a pond and Rob suddenly said, "Hey Dad. look what I found!" He was holding a young copperhead snake around 12" long! In the calmest voice I could use, I told him to not grab it and toss it away into the pond. He did and all was OK. Young or old snakes carry the same amount of toxic venom and that would not have been a good day at all. We were fairly far into the woods and cell phones were just a dream in some engineer's head.

Are you sure we're not looking for an obese stick insect?

AFAIK you are adding too much body to the snake. The "S" part of your yellow line is the snake it its entirety (I think).
It looks like a juvenile and it seems to be a chubby and short snake.

Maybe so - I admit that some of the yellow line is intended to show the snake which actually covered by a leaf or two or three. Oh well, it was a tough one.
