Help requested to trace a recent post

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I've been out of the loop, sort of, and am now trying to trace a web site whose URL I'm guessing must have been obtained through Eileen's Lounge.
canvas2.png
This is a PrtScr snapshot I saved to my hard drive on 13th April, just over a week ago, and I've checked likely posts as far back as April 1st.

The URL was a site "Earth at night" sort of thing.
If any of you can recognize/remember the post I'd be grateful.
But please don't lose sleep over it - it's possible that It wasn't gleaned from The Lounge, but from some other source.

Only, The Lounge is my most fruitful source of links to things wonderful and technological.
Thanks
Chris

It doesn't look familiar...
A google image search doesn't turn up a likely candidate either.
Best wishes,
Hans

Thanks Rudi. I believe this is it.
As usual I am curious: what was your search strategy?
Cheers chris

I used Google and started searching for posts in Eileen's (using parameter: site:EileensLounge.com) to see if I could locate any posts with references to earth night lights? There were a number of hits, but nothing really meaningful, so I removed the site: parameter and reverted to an image search via Google...

Probably a bit of luck involved, but I started with a search on your image, like this...
Image 015.jpg
After that I added some descriptive text "earth night lights" and changed the time filter to "This Year".
This lead to the Huffington post as indicated in the image below. I thought the result was interesting so I posted it.

Hi Rudi, and apologies for taking so long.
I can almost duplicate your efforts, but not quite.
The Good news: I have now joined the rest of the human race and have actually used Google Image Search!
The Bad news: I can't obtain the context-sensistive menu you display, not, at least, when i right-click on my image in the post at the start of this thread.
I am Firefox 50.0, so probably lagging behind. Again.

I saved my image to disk, did a stand-alone Google Image Search by uploading the image file, and came up with two NASA links, which would probably have gotten me to my goal in the end.

The context menu search is available in the Chrome browser (and if Google is the default search engine).

For more details about this, see the thread starting here.
If you are interested in a similar feature for FF, see Skitterbug's post in the same thread here.

Ah!
Thanks Rudi.
So I am somewhat isolated once again from the mainstream of search technology (sigh!)

I learned how to use google image search looking up dead ancestors (is there any other kind?) and it's fun to see how my grandmother resembles Attila the Hun

Why yes, always, of course!
As Richard Dawkins points out in River Out of Eden, and here I paraphrase:
You and I and every living thing that crawls or flies on the face of earth or in its waters have one thing in common. Not one of our ancestors died in infancy (my italics).

By definition, our ancestors were alive at our creation, and chances are that they remained alive during the first part of our lifetime.
We would not exist, nor would we have survived, without them being alive.
Right?

I'll send my grandpa right over Chris. He's kinda moldy but yes, still good for a doorstop.

I think that you might be thinking of your pre-decessors who, again by definition, have pre-deceased you, that is, died before you, and since you are currently alive (and well I hope!), by definition your pre-decessors must be dead.

Yes, there are and they will complain until they meet their deceased family members!
