More Fake News. This time from Hamilton (sad)

Post by ChrisGreaves »

Local papers (The Hamilton Spectator in this example) are running a news item about the day, way back in the 1890s, when people in Buffalo could see the Toronto Skyline.

Check out the skyline.
Complete with CN tower!
Cheers
Chris

OK, Chris. Because you brought it up, it is now your task to find out what the tallest building or structure was in Toronto in November 1894.

Another notable event that year was my Dad's birth.

Did you dad, by any chance, refuse to shave the whiskers off his chin?

One wonders if the Beard Building had elevators. Six or seven floors was usually the maximum height for walk up buildings until Mr. Otis famously demonstrated the safety of his elevator design. It is the elevator that makes skyscrapers possible. Imagine what sprawl New York City would be without skyscrapers.

Right.
But then, suppose they had installed elevators, who would have operated the doors and that huge metal lever?
They would be left inoperable until The World War started to produce all those poor wounded and maimed men who sat on a stool just inside the door ...
