I'd be interested to know what the actual Chinese phrase is that has been so mistranslated.
Maybe something as: "Do not walk on the grass"! (although I have no idea how that would become the English version above!)

In an attempt to try and decipher the Chinese text in the OP, I came across one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE Chinese signs. The thing about this sign is that it is so honest and does not beat around the bush!

I neither read nor speak a Chinese language, but I can see that the Chinese writing on those 'Keep off the Grass' signs is not the same, so it's hardly surprising that the English translations vary.

小 is small, and 草 is grass, so I assume that 小草 means young (recently sown) grass...
