Trapdoor spiders were certainly wise enough not to be found indoors where they may have met a fearsomely protective mother wielding a broom.
At least the lids on their burrows were easily identifiable in the garden.
As to your great aunts living in another storey- this sounds like the beginning of a great anecdote.

Yes indeed, and unlike the cases of venomous spiders, there is no auntydote.
Cheers, Chris

P.S. For anyone out there who can't abide insects/bugs in their home, consider leaving spiders alone. In particular, that spider/those spiders which inhabit the ceiling corners to trap small insects.
And if you suppose that all the insects are gone so it's OK to kill the spiders, you will, of course, be making your house a safe haven for insects.
Again.

Chris- is there an effective auntydote for a combined red back spider/eastern brown envenomation?

Yes Amelia; there is.
It is called "Move to Bonavista" where I can slip my bare feet into a pair of slippers without first pounding the slippers upside down over the bed head so as to dislodge redbacks - now I think of it! - onto the inside of my wrists.
