Self-locking bike is impossible to steal ?

Post by IMNetUser »

Saw "This self-locking bike is impossible to steal" on Yahoo Small Business Advisory site today.

This is an interesting way to lockup the bike to avoid being stolen.
But now the YERKA Project has designed a two-wheeler whose frame functions as a lock, requiring thieves to saw the frame — rendering the entire bike useless — if they want to steal it.
Three young Engineering from University in Santiago, Chile are designing the bike. The Washington Post Article also states the students are working on securing the bike with a combination lock using a smartphone. Apparently this is already being done by Bitlock.

Only thing that's required is a pole or a tree, other than that...

Agreed - They need to update design. But it is a good start.

If you have a bike stand with enough room to fit first part of bike in (without wheel), you could use the side to secure bike and wheel (put wheel over arm before securing with seat pole).

Of course this would take two bike slots. I have used the wheel skewers in the past.

I don't understand.
At the higher level I don't see what was done that can't be UNDONE by a human.
Obviously the lady "knows something", whether it is a combination or a metal key or ...
If it is the physical stem of the seat, one could cut off the stem and release the frame.
Then you'd have a bike with no seat, it's true, but you can get a bike seat for free anywhere in Toronto ...

I'm thinking along the lines of "whatever one human has done, another can undo

Talking about "cutting"...I wonder id the severed frame of these new style bikes don't lend to a weakening of the bike as a whole. Would it not put stress on other areas of the frame and "snap" in due course...

A policeman acquaintance tells me that a determined thief can steal anything. The trick is to make stuff so difficult or inconvenient to steal that they'll go and steal something else instead.

I'm going to sue you. It's your fault that my bike was stolen, because you made yours too hard to steal!

You just have to make yours harder. Bring on the "unstealable" race....

It would be simpler just to paint it fluorescent pink. No way I'd steal that...
