Breakthrough...

Post by Rudi »

At my work we have a microwave in the pause area. I use it to heat up my coffee often between support calls and training. The oven has convenient fast heat button at the bottom that when pressed it runs at full power for 30 seconds. I like my coffee hot and have found that 30sec is not quite enough...yet 1min is too much. Nowhere else on the control panel have I found how to set for 45 sec. I have asked at least a dozen colleagues, from IT, Finance, Compliance and Sales and Dist. and non could help me.

Today I'm heating my coffee (30sec  ) and around the corner comes Monica, one of our cleaners. She is in her 60's and very introvert. I just happened to blurt out how 30sec is not enough to warm my coffee...and she comes over and shows me to press the Grill button and turn the dial at the bottom. She goes on to say the grill feature is disabled for work environment safety purposes ..... and my eyes just light up at how informed she is!!

Amongst the "elite" of the employees and the learned, here comes Monica, computer illiterate and quiet, and shows me how to use the oven.
The MOST unsuspecting person :) -- Life is full of surprises and great moments!!!

TX Monica!
I'm a happy camper with perfectly heated coffee now

What a wimp you are, Rudi. A real man of your calibre should be (re-)heating for a minimum of four and half minutes, and then swallowing in one go.

As a good friend of mine would say:
THIS WEEK, WAS NEXT WEEK, LAST WEEK.

Why do I love this saying ? Totally and completely true without revealing any functional knowledge.

Congrats to your co-worker on passing on some tribal knowledge

A former colleague of mine uttered very accurate predictions, such as "If it snows in November, the next month will be December".

Yeah.
Like that patent clerk in Berne.

P.S. Why are you camping out in the office?

P.P.S. I just realised that I might have to hijack your thread quite a lot because I don't want my next thread to be hijacked.

Pause area?
Never heard that title. I like Hideout Room better. Or even Non-WiFi area. :innocent: :clapping:

Unfortunately, (or fortunately), our entire building is littered with Wi-Fi boosters, so you cannot hide from those microwaves. The pause area itself is not a room, but rather a large open area with a loooong "kitchen" type counter area with the microwave, sink, water cooler, cups and saucers and notice board...oh, and a fridge. Face your back to the counter top and there are large round tables with chairs for open meetings or social meetings, hence called pause area. Its a great setup and people use it freely...

I'm with you, Viking Bob!

I've only ever heard them called break rooms. But I guess that might give Rudi pause, eh?

If I want to hide out (get away from my workstation), I go to the canteen, order a hot chocolate (its winter here)...and sit next to the large glass windows and soak some sun. If its lunch time and its full, I hide out in a meeting room...or for extra special "solitary" hide out...there are a few "gents" rooms where you can close the door behind you and sit on a special chair
