Stop lights in the road

Post by Rudi »

I was driving in Cape Town city center this morning and noticed they made a recent upgrade to some big traffic/pedestrian crossings. When the traffic lights turn red, there are lights that appear in the road too and span the entire width of the road. I snapped this shot whilst at an intersection this morning. It does not look so spectacular in the image, but when approaching the intersection, and you see the lights activate across the road width, its quite effective and in your face... I found myself braking a bit quicker and harder just because of its effect!

We have had these but they are yellow and are used in the crosswalk areas when it is the pedestrian's turn to cross the street. But, ours flash on and off during this time. They may be found more often at the "School Crossings" and major Bus hubs, than at other intersections.

Are they done in the same way as the lights in the ground you see in sporting events these days?

These lights are similar to the cats-eye reflectors that you typically see on the roads. However they are not reflectors back actual lights that are synchronized with the red signals of the traffic lights. They are off until the traffic lights turn red and they they light up like a Xmas tree right across the road.

It certainly sounds like a good idea.

And unlike the sporting lights, they are real, and not computer generated like the touch lines on American football games or the world record lines in swimming events.

We've had Red lights up the CN Tower for years.
It's to stop Fords driving up the side of the tower ...

Somebody has actually drawn all the way up the tower.

That's a steep ink line.

And they've drawn up inside the tower.

That's a step ink line.
