Pontcysyllte was predictable, but not Happisburgh was a surprise - I expected that it would end in 'bərə' but not that 'ppi' would be omitted completely.
Best wishes,
Hans

I wanna play, too.

I grew up 20 miles away from the North Carolina city of Durham. Of course, it took its name from the city in England. I've heard it pronounced several ways. I was wondering if I could get the English pronunciation to compare with the Carolinian.

Here is the British pronunciation: Durham.

The late Bigaldoc used to point out that the pronunciation of "Versailles" in Kentucky is very different from that of the French original: Versailles.

THAT is a useful site. Thanks.
It certainly is useful. I wish Panasonic had something like it when they designed my new desk phone. It has "talking caller ID" that tries in vain to make itself understood.

Isn't that the answer to the crossword clue: Starting with N and ending with N, signifying constipation (11 letters)?

I would have expected an American to pronounce "Durram" as "Derr Ham"!

There's also Santa Fe in Tennessee--pronounced Santa Feeee, not Fay. And there's Arkansas City, Kansas, which is NOT pronounced "Ar-can-saw City", but more like "Ar--KANSAW". A chemical engineer friend of Susie's found out that locals really don't like it when you mispronounce the name of their town, especially when the atmosphere is already heated due to environmental concerns. He learned to always nab a native upon arrival and find out the local way to say things.

We visited New Mexico back in the late 90s and upon checking in to our hotel, were amazed to find out we lived in Murphy's Burro, not Murfreesboro.

Oi could never understand why it isn't pronounced "Arr-Kann-Zass", since Kansas is pronounced "Kann-Zass"

Texans are notorious for making their own rules for pronunciation. There is a town down near Corpus Christi name Tivoli. It is pronounced TY VOH luh. Almost every Spanish and native American place name has been changed to the way Texans want to say them Waxahachie, county seat of Ellis County (just South of Dallas) is pronounced WAHKS uh HATCHY

A local TV newscaster, reporting on the Malaysian Jet disappearance, said the newscast was coming from Perth, Australia. She pronounced it Pur-ETH. Said it a few times, so it wasn't a slip of the tongue.
