pennsylvanian pronounciation

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I once got into a mild bit of trouble with the US Engineers for mis-pronouncing "Kinzua" as in Kinzua Dam.

I don't want to make the same mistake with Punxsutawney and so would appreciate a consensus on how to say the name.
I don't understand the weird symbols used in Wikipedia, so some parallels with ordinary US words would be best.

Thanks in advance.

I've always heard it pronounced "pucks-ah-tawnee". Does that help?

Chris, if you hover your mouse over those "weird symbols used in Wikipedia", you get hints as to their pronunciation. From what I can see, it's pronounced pung-sa-taw-nee. And BTW, thanks for reminding me that if I ever run into its namesake groundhog, I'm going to skin it alive.

Paul

How about this:
Move your mouse over the pink work for a verbal pronunciation.

Yeah, make sure to get the "n" sound in there. I'd left it out. Sorry.

Thanks Paul.
You have just expanded my universe of discovery.
I always thought that those weird symbols were meant to exclude me from knowledge.

As usual I come to a greater understanding through the good folks in Eileen's Lounge.

On second thoughts, that's an awful construction. It's not even worth replying to.

It also does Noble British Pronunciations!
Before listening to it, how would you pronounce the name of the town of Happisburgh, in Norfolk?

And Welsh, such as Pontcysyllte, the tiny village next to the wonderful Thomas Telford canal aqueduct.
