'bum steer' is a animal that can not reproduce.

Thanks, DaveA!

That wiki definition makes a great deal more sense than anything to do with cattle. The only exception I'd take to the definition is the part about it being used mostly in Australia and New Zealand. I've used it and heard it used in the States all my life of three score years and ten plus a few.

Here in Canada I have used that expression for all fifty some years of my life and learned it from my father who, so far as I know, used it most of his life also.
