Whats the fun of just putting in any number!
As quoted on that page:
Of course, the intended answer is generally much "simpler" or more "satisfying,"
Conversely, if you want to put in any number and insist that it is correct, I will require you to prove it

let's have the full quote that you excerpted...
Dr Math wrote: Of course, the intended answer is generally much "simpler" or more "satisfying," but these are subjective and not well-defined mathematical principles
Putting 42 as the answer for every question seems to me to be both simple and satisfying, although it does somewhat detract from the "puzzle" aspect

For #2
Spoiler
40 the progression is increase by 1 x 3 then 2 x 4 then 3 x 5 To infer 1 x 3 then 2 x 4 then 2 x 5 then by 6 would appear unsupported

Hi Becks,

The value for #2 is:
Spoiler

The progression is as follows: Add 3, add 4, add 4, add 5, add 5, etc.
See ALL the SOLUTIONS in the original post above.

As I sit here reading posts and responding, I'm wearing a black T-shirt with a large "42" printed across the front. It is not only THE ANSWER . . . it is also the year I was born.

I get a lot of funny looks but only very rarely do I meet anyone who knows the significance of the number.

I thought everyone knew that it is the result of 6 x 9, which was the question.
