Sherlock Holmes rides again

Post by AlanMiller »

This is a transcript from an old movie. Watson is reading clues from a cryptic crossword puzzle to Holmes and Holmes is responding with the correct answers, seemingly without any thought or effort. For instance, Watson will read a clue and Holmes would respond like this:

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: 7 Down. Succulent soldiers linger in expectation. 4, 3, 5.
Arthur Sherlock Holmes: Aloe men tarry, my dear Watson.

See if you can guess his other pithy responses:

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: 1 Across. A simple source of citrus fruit. 1, 5, 4.
Arthur Sherlock Holmes:

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: 2 Down. Conservative pays ex-wife maintenance. 7, 5.
Arthur Sherlock Holmes:

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: 2 Down. Southern California style. 1, 2, 8.

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: 4 Down. Burglars entrance
Arthur Sherlock Holmes:

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: Right. One to go. A cowardly fish with a sting in its tail.
Arthur Sherlock Holmes:

Dr. William Watson, M.D.: Brilliant, Holmes

So my response above was correct, and it was 7,4 rather than 7,5

It was indeed. I must be horribly bored, so I checked the transcript I used as the source and it was 7,5.
Not content with this, I watched the DVD I have, which said 7,4.

Solved - a simple error in the transcript, which proved to be at the heart of the case.
Alan-meant-try 7,4... my dear Stuart.
