Alpha-Numero Puzzles

Post by geecee »

I would like to offer, for your enjoyment, a puzzle from my Alpha-Numero Puzzle Collection. Some are easy :clapping: , some may not be  .

As you can see from the attachment, the puzzle is in Portable Document File (PDF) format, so it will be necessary for you to have a PDF reader installed on your computer. There are a few (generally free) listed on the internet. Adobe is that most recommended for reading PDF files and usually comes pre-installed. However, I personally use Foxit PDF Reader as the grid can be used interactively via the typewriter feature, thereby making it unnecessary to print it out.

The solution will appear with the next Alpha-Numero Puzzle offer.

Hi HansV

Is it a secret or would you care to reveal how you get an image to appear in this manner? Do you use an image hosting service or do you attach it directly from a file on your computer?

Thanks
George

Hi GeeCee,

If I understand correctly you want to know how Hans shows the picture in a hidden state?

To get this right you must open a reply in Full Editor mode.
First you add an attachment using the Upload Attachment button at the bottom of the screen
Once it is uploaded, add it to the post using the add button. (At this stage it is added and will display in the post below your reply)
The place inline button allows one to insert the image between text in the reply if desired.
Hans used this button to insert the image into the text area of the reply.
Once this is done, the way to hide the image (or any other text) is to wrap it in a spoiler tag. This is not a service but a simple html script that will hide/show anything between the spoiler tags. Ideally you will use this for the puzzles forum to not reveal your answers and "spoil" it for the rest of the viewers

See the image for clarity...

Thanks to you both Rudi and HansV.

When I tried this method I got the message 'The extension bmp is not allowed.' so I tried using an image hosting service at freeimagehosting.nl/site2 and it worked OK.

Silly me, but it just never dawned on me to change the image to a .jpg

Now I will have to change all relevant images accordingly.

We don't allow .bmp images because their file size is usually quite large. Converting an image to .png, .jpg or .gif greatly reduces its file size.

There is an error in #6: B and N both have the formula O-J. The clue for N is incorrect.

Thanks Hans for pointing out the error. More thorough checking required. Don't know now what the clue should have been.
