certain features, e.g. like ink levels, are not available once they connect their printer to a device like this.

You certainly can't believe in the ink level reporting "feature" anyway. That's one of the most unreliable things about ink jet printers that's come down the pike in years.
WARNING, WARNING, you are about to run out of ink....run out and buy more cartridges. Meanwhile, 100s of pages later, you are still printing fine with the old cartridges.
It's probably a good idea to have a spare set in stock but never rely on the "service message" about ink levels.

True, the loss of the ink level feature is no big deal because as you say it's not exactly accurate (I only ever buy cartridges when the actual output becomes unacceptable) but I suppose there may be other more subtle effects. For example, my HP inkjet has a couple of memory cad slots on it, I wonder if they would stop appearing as drives on my PC if bidirectional functionality didn't work?
