Daisy Chaining USB Hubs

Post by BobH »

My laptop has a very limited number of USB ports. I have a significant number of USB devices but none of them are in use all the time except my BlueTooth dongle. Others I leave plugged in for convenience.

Is there any reason that I should not daisy chain multiple hubs for convenience?

 :chocciebar: :thankyou:

As long as the USB hubs have their own power supply: yes, you can. It won't work if the hubs must get their power from your laptop.

As well as the power issue that Hans mentioned, you may also need to think about bandwidth. Fast disk drives aren't going to work very well if they are competing for bandwidth.

Thank you both.

All of my devices are dongles or thumb drives.

BobH,

I have seen 12 port powered usb hubs reasonably priced on the Internet. 14 ports are also available.

It all depends on how many dongles you want in your collection.
