Verbatim external hard drive JH8Y22

Post by royfarnol »

This machine has died or at least i cannot get my PC to recognise it. Not too sad but there are photographs on it I would like to retrieve. How might this be achieved if at all possible?

Thanks, Roy.

Have you checked that the cable is seated firmly on both sides?
Assuming it is a USB drive, have you tried connecting it to a different USB port?
Best wishes,
Hans

Yes I have checked the connections out in different ports. It looks like a Norwegian Blue to me. But I would like to save the photographs.

I tried looking up the part number JH8Y22 on Verbatim.Com and found no matches.

You can try using the USB cables on another device to ensure the cables are OK.

Is the external hard drive need a separate power source or is it powered by USB ? The power brick could be bad - generally not happen but does at times.

Presuming it is an external hard drive and the cables are good, you can try to remove the hard drive from the case and put in a HDD Docking station.

Some eBay examples are here: HDD Docking Stations.

I have several of these stations for IDE, SATA and/or Laptop drives when I need to get information or clone images to the hard drives.

You could try a recovery program?

Probably not if the PC can't recognise the hard disk!

Depends on what Roy means when he said his PC didn't recognise it. If the disk is powering up & spinning but Windows says it can't read it then Recuva (the recovery program Rudi linked to and a utility no one should be without) might be able to read the nominally unreadable drive.

If it's not powering up though the disk might be OK and as already been suggested it might be just a bad power supply. In which case you could try disassembling the thing so that you can remove the actual HDD from the casing. After you've done that you could then try slaving the disk direct to your PC.

Once again, if it spins up you'll either be able to either get the files off with a simple copy & paste or with Recuva.

If it still doesn't work then the only option will be to pay a professional data recovery company to get your files back.

Thankyou John, Rudi, Scott and Ken.

I shall try your advised solutions. But I might have to prise my wallet from my wife's grasp and buy back my photographs from a geek.
