Eliminating background colour?

It's usually a great waste of time and ink having to print out somebody's artistic excesses with coloured backgrounds.

Printing in grayscale of course simply produces a grey background.

Is there any way to avoid printing the background?

What are you printing? Documents (from which application)? Or web pages? Or pictures? Or ...?

This latest document I printed out is from a PDF file but I have encountered coloured backgrounds in just about every form.

(One of my pet hates is getting white print on a grey background!)
