Cleaning a touch screen?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

For years I've been told/read that one can't just use a Kleenex(TM) tissue to clean a monitor.
I twigged that the newspaper-vinegar trick for windows (not (TM)) is a no-no on genuine Windows(TM) hardware.

My latest laptop has a touch-screen.
My buddy eats french fries.
My screen has french-fry grease, in places.

What, today, is a recommended cleansing technique for monitor screens that are meant to be touched by the human hand and must, we therefore assume, be coated with all sorts of gunk?

And by "recommended cleansing technique" I am including materials and manual operation.

TIA

The same that you would use to clean eyeglasses. A soft cloth and glass cleaner; however, do not spray the cleaner directly on the screen. Spray the cloth then wipe the screen. You might have to use several cloths.

Opticians will sell you a kit or you might have got one with your last pair of eyeglasses.

The usual idea I've come across for ordinary LCD screens is to use distilled or de-ionised water (such as one used to put in car batteries) applied carefully with microfibre cloth. How you get rid of grease from a screen surface is probably another matter.

Probably the greasy should not use touch screens?

There are oils in finger tips. Unless one buys and uses the special gloves, oiling touch screens is unavoidable when they are used.

I make a homemade concoction of a cleaning solution that I use on windows. It consist of 1 part household ammonia, 1 part isopropyl alcohol, and 2 parts distilled water. I use 4 parts water for use with eyeglasses and TV/monitor screens. I have used it without apparent harm for years on these screens including my iPhone and iPad touchscreens. I do not spray the screens but moisten a part of the soft cloth - a satiny material but microweave cloth should be good - and wipe down the screen then polish with a dry part of the cloth.

I meant to post earlier...

We use a product similar to Medisan Hard Surface Disinfectant Wipes for cleaning telephones, keyboards, screens, mice, spectacles, mobile 'phones, etc. Works a treat on just about everything!

We use fiber cloth and a flat screen cleaner.
The fiber cloths I buy at a hardware or tool shop, as they are cheaper there than at any of the kitchen type of stores.
The fiber cloths works real well with the hard screen on out Kindles , so we keep a cloth with them.

I use this proprietary screen cleaner. I bought a couple of bottles years ago and they seem to last forever.

One wonders what these specialty cleaning fluids for LEDs, laptops, et al contain that is specific to those uses. I followed the Amazon link only to learn that the product is not available at this time. Has it been pulled from the marketplace?

Rudi, the ophthalmologist says that my eyes might eventually recover but that I must avoid any more occurrences of such sights. :flee:

Just distilled water and a detergent, but it dispenses as a very fine mist and you use very little
