I am running Office 2007 on Windows 7
I have an 'MDI' file that seems to have been abandoned (see below), however there are several sites that offer free conversion software/services. As I am leery of unfamiliar offerings I seek the advice of loungers who have satisfactorily converted mdi files to jpg.

See this page with accompanying instructions.
It does not use 3rd party apps but guides you through activating the Microsoft Office Document Imaging Tool that comes with Microsoft Office 2007.
Once it is active you will be able to open these file types.
