I was wondering if anybody had any experience or knowledge of this software.
It sounds good - very good.
Any comments?
Thanks

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
It seems like it's similar to Symantec Ghost software which allows you to reboot to pre-defined images. I have not experience with this product though.

Do you manage public access PCs?BenCasey wrote:I was wondering if anybody had any experience or knowledge of this software.

A single user would be at a big disadvantage trying this on their own PC. IMHO.

How so, Bob. Why would that make any difference?Do you manage public access PCs?

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
You generally don't want to lose all your settings each time you reboot your own private computer.
It's very useful for computers in classrooms, libraries, etc. though.

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
It looks more like Deep Freeze which is a very good program to manage public used machines.
It requires ALL saved data to off of the System drive or it is thrown away on each reboot.
See http://www.deepfreeze.com.au/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
"Reboot Restore Rx is a non-restrictive hard drive restore product designed for public access PC management. The PC users feel as though they have complete control over the PC. But regardless of what they do, including erasing files, installing software or even hacking the system registry, Reboot Restore Rx will automatically restore the PC to a predefined baseline -- every time the workstation is restarted, or turned on. Making the workstations perfectly configured and available for the next user."BenCasey wrote:How so, Bob. Why would that make any difference?Do you manage public access PCs?

The typical home user will make many changes and additions to their system. So you go through some big improvement or upgrade and the next time you reboot or restart......there goes the changes you made.

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
I don't think that is quite right.
When a user changes something, they can update the 'Imaged' version with a click of a (hidden if you like) button. Therefore nothing is lost (Not the free one, however).
The'Compare' list on the left menu will show what is available for the 3 types of this product range.
That apart, does anyone know if it handles volumes with TrueCrypt on it?

Also if there is a one click to change the image, what good is that, then anyone could update the image.

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
For being a freeware, it works great (I used to use Steadystate before it was discontinued.) The new version of Reboot restore now has a function so that only certain people in charge - administrators for example - can change stuff.
The issue with TrueCrypt is that it works beneath Windows, just like Reboot Restore...so there are conflicts of encryption. FYI, according to their website,TrueCrypt has been discontinued.

Re: ReBoot and Restore - Free Software
The status of TrueCrypt is a bit odd at the moment. The code has been published and is freely available for anyone to take on the maintenance. I am fairly confident that a suitable group of people will take it over.

RebootRestorerx is a demo that hides behind a freeware !BenCasey wrote:I was wondering if anybody had any experience or knowledge of this software.

This free product seems good at preventing changes on a home personal computer. Because it allows anyone using the computer to uninstall it, even before windows boots (no permissions necessary), it is not a solution for public machines at cafes, schools, or libraries.

Actually, with the new build, only the person who is using it in administrator mode can make such changes...the user itself will not even be able to visualize this.
I wouldn't recommend it for personal use. Why would you want it to reboot every single time you turn on your computer? Then every thing you change, any thing you download will be futile.
