Resize to a target FILE SIZE?

Post by ChrisGreaves »

I use “VSO Image Resizer” to reduce my 5MB images to a reasonable size.
VSO allows me to select various pixel sizes, starting around 320x, going through 640x, 1024x and so on.

When I am posting an image on Eileen’s Lounge I’d like an option to reduce the size calculated on the basis of bytes.
Does anyone use a re-sizer that would allow me to specify, say, 255Kb and let the computer work out what pixel size (or reduction ratio) is required to achieve the goal?

I know that I could do this by iteratively re-sizing, saving, and inspecting the file size, but computers are supposed to relieve of us boring and repetitive tasks ...

Thanks
Chris

IrfanView with the RIOT plug-in lets you specify a target file size.

Wot Hans said. I use IrfanView's 'save for web' option, which uses the RIOT plugin to get my 10MB+ photos down to the Lounge limit of 256KB. I'm always impressed by that, despite the huge number of pixels that are being chucked away, the resulting images still look good.

I use PhotoScape. One can use the built in resizer tool, but a handy slider allows one to dynamically resize the image when you choose to save it. Dragging the slider will show the percentage of scale relative to the current image size and provide the file size after it is saved.

Makes you wonder why we needed all those pixels in the first place

What do you have against pixels?

It's not their fault someone decided to take a picture.

*As it were* Oh please, join in, pixels. O Come, All Ye, we are going to take a picture!
*Later* Ehm, I think we don't need your services any longer. Bye.

BTW, hasn't this topic been discussed a couple of times?

For sharing on the web, you've got a point.

For printing at A3 size, they help
