Synchronizing Pictures folder without moving photos

I just set OneDrive to synchronize my Pictures. Once I did this, a new Pictures folder was created in my OneDrive folder. The Pictures folder in my OneDrive Folder is located in OneDrive\Pictures. It appears as though all of the photos that were located in my C:\Pictures folder have now been moved to my OneDrive Folder. Why is this? Can't OneDrive continue to sync the photos in my C:\Pictures folder without moving it? I would prefer that my Pictures folder not be moved because moving it to my OneDrive folder will get it lost in the clutter of many document folders. I would prefer to keep it set apart.

If you go to your LOCAL "Pictures" folder, is it empty?

My local Pictures folder is now in my OneDrive folder. When I click on pictures, I am redirected to the Pictures folder that was created in my OneDrive folder, which is not what I intended to do.
