Backup software recommendations

Post by StuartR »

I have been a happy user of Acronis TrueImage for many years, but I am now thinking of migrating to a different product. This is due to a bug that stops my cloud backups from working, which appeared within weeks of my current version going out of support. I don't want to upgrade to their latest version as this is available on an annual subscription only, with no perpetual license, and includes anti-malware components that I don't need.

Features I need from my backup software include:
  • Full image backups and selected file/folder backups
  • Backup and restore to/from local disks, and local shares
  • Bare metal restoration of full image backup, ideally from a network share
  • Selected file restoration
  • Automatically scheduled full and differential backups
  • Auto deletion of previous backups, while keeping specified number of prior versions
Features that I would also like to have include:
  • Continuous backup of files to cloud, with multiple previous versions of each file maintained based on available space
  • Replication of local backup to cloud
  • All backups encrypted with a password that I specify
  • Email notification of failed/successful backup
Does anyone have a product that they love, and would like to recommend?

I downloaded the latest version of Acronis TrueImage (same version as I have installed) and did a repair installation and it has started working again.

This makes it less urgent for me to find an alternative, but I would still be interested in what backup product people are using and how well they might meet my future needs.

Macrium Reflect for me!
I have a pathological hatred of Acronis. Too much went wrong with an early version for me ever to consider it again.

How well does Macrium Reflect cover the requirements in my post?

I have used ShadowProtect for years and it certainly meets my requirements.

This link might address your listed requirements…

(I am on my iPad at the moment and have trouble using some of the embedded url features 😃 )

Thankyou Bob, I will have a look, thanks also to John. I see I have plenty of research to do. Fortunately I no longer have an urgent need to sort this.

Hi Stuart, another link for you…

https://buy.storagecraft.com/StorageCra ... P1459.aspx

There are many versions but I believe this is the one with the perpetual license. At the bottom of the page from the above link it also provides information on a couple of options.

If BigAl were still around I know he would also recommend this version. (R.I.P. BigAl … never forgotten)
Regards,
Bob

I recently switched allegiance to Macrium Reflect as well. This was due to a terrible mess which occurred two years after a friend upgraded to Acronis 2020.

When we tried to restore her computer from backup in March 2022, we discovered that her backups were unusable. Apparently there were MANY changes that needed to be made to our standard routine (which worked fine with Acronis 2017):
