I HAD chosen that same option and was baffled when it was ignored.
So, go into Update and click only "Turn off automatic updates." (Deselect "Check for updates...)This logically affects other non-MSE update options, but since I don't do any automatic options, I am not inconvenienced.

a) Updates to MSE the application (v1.0 to v1.1 to v2.0 or what ever numbering convention it uses), these WILL be controlled by your Windows Update and/or MSE settings.
b) Updates to the virus definitions (issued at least daily maybe more frequently), which I suspect can't be turned off because, at the risk of sounding really dull and repeating myself again, an AV app that has an out of date virus definition file is as good as useless.
