Gmail - switch to Standard View

Post by uncle »

Hello –

I have been trying to switch to Gmail's Standard View using Firefox both IE and have had no luck. I searched this on the web and there are many posts about not being able to switch. I have deleted the Gmail cookies, cleared the cache, no luck.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you.

Hmmm, although neither is the most recent version, they should be able to use standard view. Mysterious... (I'm using IE9 and Firefox 6.02, and neither offers me the option to switch away from standard view any more.)
Best wishes,
Hans

Yes, according to Gmail, both versions are able to support (right word?) Standard View....

Have you tried Google's own browser, Chrome?

I know nothing about gmail but a Google search on:
gmail standard view not working firefox 3.6
led me to the suggestion that if you run FF in safe mode you get an option to reset user preferences and if you do that (although you loose your customisations so you have to put them all back again) gmail std view will start working.

Before you try that out, have you been through the 'disable all add-ins and see if that fixes it and then put them back one at a time until the problem crops up again, which pin points the root of the problem' routine?

Hi Ken and Hans -

Hans - switching to Chrome didn't work.

Ken - Yes, I disabled all Add-ons. Didn't work. I am loath to run FF in Safe Mode because of the customization issue.

Thanks for the ideas.

It could be a lot to do with your connection speed - gmail will default to the simple html view if it thinks your connection is not fast empty to support all the fancy ajax tricks that standard view uses. Usually when you first sign in and you get the loadingvpage there is an option at the bottom to choose standard or basic view. Alternatively you can choose standard view using mail settings under the gear icon at the top rhs.

By jove Uncle is right! I've also had a look in Mail Settings, because I swear that the option did used to reside in there, and there is no option any more. It also used to appear in the footer of the page but that's been cleaned up recently aswell and now only contains the barest threads of the options it used to. Hmm. Perhaps it's been got rid of in an attempt to get more people to use Chrome, which always loads Standard Veiw regardless of connection speed.
