If I turn Chat off, will I still receive notification that someone is trying to 'chat' with me?

If you select "Chat off" in the Chat tab of Settings in Gmail, you won't receive chat requests anymore.
Best wishes,
Hans

Re: Gmail chat/hangout
I don't think so, but I don't use Google Chat/Hangouts myself, so I'm not 100% sure.
Best wishes,
Hans
