Switch to Gmail from AOL webmail

I would like to switch email from AOL webmail to Gmail.(Already have a Gmail acct) I understand that when in Gmail, I select the Accounts and Import tab, Import mail and contacts. Then enter my AOL address under What account do you want to import from? Then enter AOL password, then Continue.
That all seems too easy. What about AOL folders, Contacts?
I think I heard that my contacts can be notified of the change. True?
Other Instructions, etc. would be most appreciated.

The WikiHow article explains how to export your contacts from AOL Mail and import them into Gmail.

Also see How to Import AOL Messages and Contacts Into Gmail. It explains that "Messages imported from AOL Mail folders other than New Mail are automatically assigned a label derived from the folder name. All mail imported from your AOL Family folder will get the Family label, for example."
