Thunderbird not responding

Post by viking33 »

Anyone had any experience using TB and randomly ( so it seems ) getting that not responding message? It will totally freeze up and even Task Manager can not end the process. The whole screen fades out and nothing happens, then finally , occasionally it will come back to life?
This seems to be happening over the last few version updates.

Some antivirus programs clash with Thunderbird - see Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus Related Performance Issues for more info.

I did read that info and tried disabling the AV temporarily but still had that problem? :groan:
I've been having more than my share of TB problems and so far, have tried uninstalling the whole program and reinstalling with a new profile. Ready to give it the "heave ho." but don't want to go back to IE.

Have you tried starting TB in safe mode? See Safe Mode TB.

Hans

The problem with Safe Mode is that the occurrence of not responding is very unpredictable and I can't stay in SM long enough to say if it works OK or not.

I don't use TB myself. Perhaps someone who does will have a suggestion...

If/when it happens again, check in TaskManager which processes may be working overtime.

There is supposed to be a new 64 bit version, called Earlybird. (true)

I've looked at TM a few times and it seems most times, it's just TB running with excessive CPU time. Also, when it is in the not responding mode, even TM can't kill the process. I have to reboot to get back to "normal."

As far as I know TB is a email program, what does it have to do not using IE?
IE has no email program that is part of it.

Oops, meant something like Windows Mail or whatever. Shows you how long it's been since I ventured into MS land. :innocent:

Extreme frustration.
Saved the old profile folder, uninstalled TB with 3rd party uninstaller. Re-installed TB, created another new profile
One by one, copied over just the email folders and I'm happy to say, it looks like it's running OK.
Whatever that was, it was a real nasty one. :crossfingers: :coffeetime:
